  2.                      SoftBlox SmartTasks for Windows 3.1

  5.         The SmartTasks Utility is a Task Manager and, if you so desire,
  6.         a shell replacement. It provides one-click access to all active
  7.         applications, all existing groups and applications within, and 
  8.         the most recently run tasks. In addition it supports save/restore
  9.         of multiple desktop layouts, and a command line with history.
  10.         It's primary purpose is to provide a fast and efficient means of
  11.         controlling running tasks, selective launching and desktop customization.
  12.         It does this in a fast and efficient package with minimal resource
  13.         consumption.

  15.         This version is a beta release distributed free of charge for
  16.         personal use. It should be removed upon commercial release of the
  17.         product (1/93), on an honor basis. SmartTasks is not freeware and 
  18.         as such should not be distributed by any third parties or 
  19.         included on any shareware disks.

  21.         The commercial version of SmartTasks includes enhanced customization,
  22.         network support, extensive hypergraphic online help, a full setup and
  23.         de-installation facility and several other related utilities. In addition
  24.         it supports full drag-and-drop server capability to the desktop. It is 
  25.         priced at $30.00 SRP and for a limited time it will be bundled with 
  26.         SmartPad for Windows (another retail product from us providing 
  27.         sophisticated macro recording/playback, full DDE client and server,
  28.         application-specific floating and embedded toolbars 
  29.         - like SmartIcons, Speedbars and Excel type toolbars but even better -
  30.         for any existing Windows app or apps you develop, and much more...).

  32.         pricing for any of our products.

  34.         To minimize download time for this distribution, no setup and/or online
  35.         help is supplied. To install Softblox SmartTasks Utility on your computer, 
  36.         follow these steps:

  38.   0.   Unzip the downloaded ZIP file.
  39.  
  40.   1.   Copy SBTASKMN.EXE to your desired directory.
  41.  
  42.   2.   Copy SBICTLW.DLL to a Windows System directory such as 
  43.        c:\windows or c:\windows\system
  44.  
  45.        -or-
  46.  
  47.        to a directory specified in your PATH.

  49.        VERY IMPORTANT: This beta release is being distributed without
  50.                        a Setup/Installation procedure. As such there is
  51.                        no version checking for any prior copies of this DLL.
  52.                        Since we have a set of retail products out in the
  53.                        market, as well as freeware packages being distributed, 
  54.                        it is important to ensure that you have the latest
  55.                        version of this DLL in your path. All previous apps
  56.                        are upward compatible with this DLL.

  58.   3.   Install SmartTasks in a Softblox Program Group or in another Program
  59.        Manager Group of your choice, using the "New..." selection of the
  60.        "File" Menu Item.

  64.        alternatively, just run the SmartTasks program from the "Run..."
  65.        selection of the "File" Menu Item.

  67.   4.   Once the SmartTasks application is running, you can install it as
  68.        the default task manager and/or shell by checking the appropriate
  69.        buttons in the "Options..." dialog.

  73.        You can modify your SYSTEM.INI file to make SmartTasks your default
  74.        Task Manager and/or shell. To do so:
  75.  
  76.                 a. Insert lines in the '[boot]' section as follows:
  77.  
  78.                         taskman.exe=\...appropriate path...\SBTASKMN.EXE
  79.                         shell=\...appropriate path...\SBTASKMN.EXE
  80.  
  81.                    The first line, if specified, will make SmartTasks the
  82.                    default taskmanager (invocable by dbl-clk on the desktop
  83.                    or hitting CTRL-ESC). The second line will make SmartTasks
  84.                    the default shell.

  86.                 b. If you have any existing lines with 'taskman.exe=' or
  87.                    'shell=', precede them with ';' (semi-colon). This will
  88.                    in effect comment them out.

  90.        If you make any of the above-mentioned changes, please make sure 
  91.        you exit and restart Windows to allow for the changes to take effect.
  92.        You can 'recycle' Windows by clicking on the "Quick Restart" button
  93.        within SmartTasks itself.
